Mahershala ali: was discriminated against when buying a house

US actor mahershala ali (44) has just been nominated for an oscar for his role in the racist drama "green book – a special friendship.
In real life, the african-american has faced discrimination himself – not because of the color of his skin, but because of his religion. "The government blocked us from buying a house (in los angeles) because we are muslims and they had to vet us first," ali told the german press agency. "We wanted to buy a rental house. The bank had to report to national security or some such agency that muslims were buying a certain property. It had to be approved first."
Ali reacted pragmatically. "I can’t speak for others. For me it’s just important how I deal with it and react to it," he said. "I don’t want anyone to determine my well-being or affect my relationship to the world." He therefore prefers to worry about things he can control.
The actor, who can also be seen in the third season of the crime series "true detective", promoted optimism. "We have to focus on hope now," said ali, who hopes "green book" will have a positive impact. "This film does not solve the problem of race and class. But he makes his contribution and pleads for values like openness and friendship."
The film is based on a true story and tells of racism in the u.S. In the 1960s. The work, which has already won three golden globes, will be released on 31 december. January in the cinemas.
